In August, San Tirso de Abres is full of things to do. The council has lined up several events for all audiences during the first half of the month, along with an astronomical event that the Iberian Peninsula has not witnessed in over a century. If you are staying at La Casona de Amaido, at the campsite or in a nearby village, plans for the whole family are just minutes away.
Summer Carnival — Friday 7 August
The festivities kick off on Friday the 7th with the Summer Carnival. From 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. there will be face painting for the little ones in Plaza de San Juan. From 9:00 p.m., dinner is served, with live music by Dúo Belinda and a menu of cooked ham, picadillo (Asturian minced pork), boiled potatoes, hard-boiled egg, bread, dessert and coffee.
Tickets are €20 for adults and €15 for children. They are on sale at Bar-Tienda La Farrapa (33774 El Llano, Asturias).
7th Summer Market and 2nd Second-Hand Fair — Sunday 9 August
On Sunday the 9th, the San Tirso de Abres Recreational Area hosts two events at the same time, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. On one side, the 7th Summer Market, with local food produce and crafts. On the other, the 2nd Second-Hand Fair, a great chance to give all kinds of items a second life.
Both events offer a bar and food service and children’s activities, with free bouncy castles from 4:00 p.m. If the weather does not cooperate, the market will move to the Municipal Sports Centre.
A Historic Total Solar Eclipse — Wednesday 12 August
On the evening of Wednesday 12 August 2026, the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in over a century will take place. The band of totality will cross Spain from west to east, passing through many provincial capitals from A Coruña to Palma, including Oviedo, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza and València.
Asturias lies within this band, making the region a privileged spot to experience the phenomenon. Spain sits at the far end of the band of totality, so the eclipse will occur as the Sun is setting very close to the horizon. It is therefore best to find a spot with a clear view to the west. As it happens in summer, the chances of enjoying clear skies are high across much of the country.
It is the perfect moment to stay in a natural setting like San Tirso de Abres and take in the most special sunset of the year. Just remember to always watch the eclipse with certified eclipse glasses to protect your eyesight.
